Stok Palace, Leh, Ladakh
You won’t simply be treated like royalty at this 200-year-old home, which was previously the Namgyal dynasty’s palace. Because scion Jigmed Namgyal still lives here, you’ll be treated like royalty. Beautiful courtyards and passageways lead to six suites on the magnificent exteriors. Each apartment has been meticulously restored to its previous splendour. The Queen’s Chambers is sumptuous, while the others are small and cosy, with flowing hot water and backup electricity. You may eat on the terrace, which has a view of the majestic Ladakhi peaks, or in the comfortable dining rooms within, depending on the weather.
If it becomes too chilly to go outside, visit the royal museum or attend the resident monk’s prayers. Stok has just added to its repertoire a group of three mud-and-wood homes (with internal heating). Near the palace, Chulli Bagh is nestled among apricot, walnut, and willow trees. Chulli is open all year, unlike Stok, which is only open from May to September. The cherry blossoms bloom in April and that’s the best time to visit.
