Maharajas' Express

The Maharajas’ Express, which debuted in 2010 and completed its inaugural journey in 2011, is India’s newest and most opulent train. Cabin sizes range from standard to suites with a separate living area. There is even a presidential suite with its own carriage.

Teak doors separate your cabin from the passageway, and the rooms are decorated with Indian patterns and brass trim.

Most meals are consumed on board, and practically everything is prepared from scratch by the inhouse chef. The chef walks the dining room during dinner, interacting with guests and providing anecdotes about the meals they are serving. The meals served off board are unique and distinctive experiences that you may not be able to have as an independent tourist.

With journeys ranging from three to six nights, five separate routes focus on the northern state of Rajasthan and its neighbouring areas. Treasures of India is the shortest tour. It’s a great way to get a taste of luxury train travel without committing to the longer tours, as it just takes three nights.

As it approaches a station, the Maharajas’ Express is difficult to miss. It has a cherry-red body with gold markings on it, and it is the cleanest train. Local musicians announce the train’s arrival on the platform at each station as it comes in. You walk onto a red carpet and are greeted by a flower garland.

A guided sightseeing tour is included in each city. Although tours are conducted in groups, you will be provided with headphones to listen to the guide, who speaks through a microphone. The Maharaja Express itinerary offers one-of-a kind experiences that would otherwise be unavailable. In Jaipur, for example, you will be granted access to the royal family’s private chambers in the City Palace.
