Best time to visit Periyar

Unlike central and north Indian tiger reserves, Periyar remains operative even during monsoons. The National Park is open around the year. However, one should visit the park between September and April as the chances of spotting tigers and other rare species remain high owing to the favourable weather conditions.

Tiger Reserve

The Tiger Reserve in Periyar is the main attraction of the region.

Mangla Devi temple, Kurikaddy and Chellar Kovil

Located about 15 km, 5 km and 15 km away from Thekkady respectively. These are amazing eco-tourism spots with stunning panorama.

Cultural centres

Mudra Cultural Centre and Kadathanadan Kalari Centres are around 10.1 km and 10.2 km from Periyar and are notable for various types of cultural events that showcase the rich culture and the spectacular art of the region. The events include mainly dance performances Kathakali and the very old and original form of the martial art of India called the Kalarippayattu. These performers also allow tourists to view their hard work and effort that they put in to make such great pieces of art. Their style and impeccable artistic finesse leave one awe inspired.  

Anakarra

This is a small village in the Idukki district which is about 18 km from the tiger reserve, noteworthy for the exceptionally bountiful spice plantations and attractive waterfalls. Anakarra is located on the highway that extends from Kumily to Munnar.

Spice and Organic farm

One can also explore several Spices Plantations where medicinal herbs and spices are grown in abundance. Tourists are provided with insights into the procedures of growing them by using advanced agricultural techniques.

Things to do in Periyar

Boat ride on Thekkady or Periyar Lake which adorns the heart of the magnificent jungle is best known for its rich fauna. One can indulge in a luxurious boat ride in the lake and soak in ultimate tranquility.

  • Water sports lovers can try out the exciting bamboo rafting. The Forest Department at Thekkady provides this facility; the catchment area of the park is used for this activity.
  • Border Hiking is yet another exciting activity which is conducted by many agencies and by the forest department, into the depths of the wilderness.
  • Kayaking in the Gavi river.
