In Hindu mythology, Rishikesh holds great spiritual and historical significance. Legend has it that after slaying Ravana, Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana meditated here. Laxman is said to have crossed the Ganges on a jute rope at the location of the now-famous Laxman Jhula Suspension Bridge. The bridge was later built in his honor in 1929.
